why is it that i never really know what i'm doing?

i went to school. got the 27k in debt to prove it. they taught me all kindsa nifty stuff.

and yet, what do i do when an 8 year old pees on the floor in a stream from the self checks to the kids computers? (and just how big is an 8 year old's bladder anyway?) what do i do when a man with garlic and steak breath professes his undying love to me. again. for the 3rd time today.

this is a chronicle of what i did, when the crazy happened. which, in a public library is much more often than you'd think. and which, they also don't teach you about in liberry skool.

oh, and there's also a book review or two.

a little slow

Where She Went (If I Stay, #2)Where She Went by Gayle Forman

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

Forman, Gayle. Where She Went. 5CDs. 5.5 Hours. Penguin Audio. 2011. ISBN: 978-0-1424-2852-2 $25.95. F

Right after Mia decides to keep living, she walks out of Adam's life, seemingly forever. Mia heads to the East coast to Julliard, leaving Adam to wallow in his misery and score an entire album of angst ridden songs which promptly top the charts. Three years later, riding the wave of super-stardom, Adam, still suffering from the break, runs into Mia in New York city. They have one night to say all of the things they've left unsaid. Read by Dan Bittner, who efficiently develops the poetry and lyrical qualities of the book without making it fatuous. Adam's story, like Mia's progresses while fluctuating between past and present allowing the reader insight and empathy. Though it packs much less of an emotional punch than prequel If I Stay, Forman creates a tidy 'happy ever after' with Where She Went. Fans of the previous novel will be pleased with the sense of conclusion, and the romance, but new readers may feel let down by the low key story and lack of emotional build-up that was present in the first novel. Recommended to fans of That Summer by Sarah Dessen and The Notebook by Nicholas Sparks.

the reason i'm a liberrian

so, this year, for the summer reading game, we're giving out ducks.  what have ducks got to do with reading? you ask.

honestly, i have no earthly idea.  none.  but, it's easy to manage the ducks since all four prizes are well...ducks.  we just let the kid pick a ninja duck or princess duck, or pirate duck, or whatever out of the box and move on.  no stacks of prizes in little drawers to figure out.

staff has to promote the program, so, we all wear ducks on our badges or on lanyards. i picked a blue pirate duck.

a little girl got her four ducks for finishing the program and we were chatting about the books she'd read when she said, "so you only read one book?", pointing at my duck.

i said yes, i'd only read one book.

she said, "is that because you're so busy working?"

i replied yes, we work really hard here at the library and hardly ever have time to read at work.

she left, thanking me for her four princess ducks.

she came back after a half our with something behind her back. she whispered, "i have a surprise for you." she then presented me with Nora Roberts', The Search. she said, "now you don't have to find a book to read!"

i told her I'd read it as soon as humanly possible:)

paradise?

The Paradise ProphecyThe Paradise Prophecy by Robert Browne

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

i may have given this an extra star just because i love apocolypse stories so much. really liked the characters and LOVED the milton references. in fact, this whole book is a tribute to paradise lost, i recommend to fans of milton for sure. i also really loved the illustrations. each chapter has its own unique reproduction of the angels/demons pictures. i think they were a bit fuzzy since i had an advanced copy, but still very cool.
